Hydrofluoro Ethers

The rising interest in hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) in the past two decades is due to several of their physicochemical properties. First, compounds of this class have nearly zero stratospheric ozone depletion. HFEs are also inert, low-freezing and, in some cases, relatively high-boiling liquids. Due to their high molecular weight, they remain in the atmosphere for less than two weeks, being absorbed into the ground rather than remaining dissolved in the atmosphere.

Although they are a greenhouse gas, the EPA does not regulate their use due to their short atmospheric lifetime and zero ozone depletion potential compared to alternative chemicals. Therefore, they are being phased in as third generation replacements for CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons), HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) and chlorinated solvents currently used in many industrial processes.

Current industrial uses of HFEs are many and varied:

  • Vapor de-greasing solvents
  • Wet cleaning solvents
  • Refrigerants and heat-transfer fluids
  • Anhydrous fluid cleaners
  • Blowing agents
  • Deaerating agents
  • Dewatering agents
  • Dry etching agents in semiconductor manufacturing

Fluoryx offers many of the common HFE’s (for example, HFE-347) as well as many new HFE’s that have not been previously considered by industry. These new HFE’s have a wide range of physical properties such as melting point, boiling point, density, refractive index, and solvent ability that can be fit to very specific needs. In addition, by blending two or more HFE’s together, the possible properties, and therefore uses, are almost endless.
