1H-Perfluorocarbons

1H-perfluorocarbons are perfluorocarbons with one terminal fluorine atom replaced by a hydrogen atom.  1H-perfluorocarbons are a subset of compounds general known as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

HFCs have seen increase interest over the last few decades because they do not contain ozone-destroying chlorine or bromine atoms.  Therefore, they are used as substitutes for
ozone-depleting compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in such uses as refrigeration, air conditioning, fire extinguishing agents, and as blowing agents for the production of insulating foams. The Montreal Protocol, a 1987 international agreement, has gradually phased out the use of CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances, leading to the development of long-term replacements such as HFCs.

In addition, 1H-perfluorocarbons mayo be considered for replacement of chlorinated or chlorofluorocarbon solvents. Chlorinated hydrocarbons and chlorofluorocarbons have been commonly used as solvents in the past, but due to their toxicity and/or global warming potential, alternatives for these products have been sought. Perfluorocarbon solvents, molecules containing only carbon and fluorine, have found use as replacements for some of these products.  However, in some instances, 1H-perfluorocarbons solvents may have advantages over perfluorocarbon solvents.  1H-perfluorocarbons have lower global warming potential than perfluorocarbons.  1H-perfluorocarbons are also slightly more polar than perfluorocarbons, which sometimes makes them a better solvent choice.

Finally, 1H-perfluorocarbons can be used as intermediates for the synthesis of other fluorocarbons.  Under certain conditions, the hydrogen of 1H-perfluorocarbons can be converted to other functional groups. For example, 1H-perfluorocarbons can be oxidized to perfluoroalkanoyl fluorides.  Thus, 1H-perfluorohexane can be oxidized to produce perfluorohexanoyl fluoride.
